TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Former KMT Taipei branch chair Huang Lu Chin-ju (黃呂錦茹) was released on bail of NT$10 million (US$333,800) after she pled guilty to recall petition forgery, reports said Friday.
Of about 5,000 petitions against two DPP lawmakers in Taipei, more than 90% were found to have been forged. Huang initially denied her involvement, but at a court hearing Friday, she pleaded guilty to all charges, the Liberty Times reported.
Two other KMT officials also admitted they had downloaded a name list of party members and told aides to forge signatures on the petitions. The court set bail at NT$2 million for each official.
All defendants will be barred from traveling overseas, sailing out to sea, or moving to another address for eight months. Huang will also have to wear an ankle tracker and carry an extra smartphone to take selfies at predetermined times and locations before uploading them for the police to see.
At Friday’s court session, her attorney argued there was no need to keep her detained anymore, as her alleged accomplices had also pled guilty. The attorney also mentioned Huang’s age, 75, as an argument in favor of bail. Prosecutors disagreed because the initiator of the recall campaign against the two DPP lawmakers still denied allegations.
Not one recall petition campaign against DPP lawmakers resulted in an actual vote, while all 24 KMT lawmakers targeted by the recalls, including five in Taipei, survived the July 26 votes. Seven recalls are still scheduled for Aug,. 23 in other parts of the country.
