TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Peru’s largest harbor reopened Friday after 50 containers fell off an Evergreen ship from Taiwan.
The Ever Lunar, transporting 7,000 containers, was waiting in the bay outside Callao to enter the harbor Friday at 10 a.m. when 50 containers fell off the back of the ship into the water, per CNA. The cause of the incident was not known, but nobody was injured.
The Navy and the port authorities shut down the harbor to prevent collisions amid foggy weather conditions. The containers did not include hazardous materials, according to preliminary reports.
Some of the containers had sunk to the bottom of the bay, while some were open, with their contents floating on the surface, news site RPP reported. The authorities recovered several containers, while they also put out markers to indicate the location of submerged containers likely to pose a hazard to shipping.
The harbor reopened to shipping at 4 p.m. while an investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to RPP. The Taiwan-flagged ship had sailed from Buenaventura in Colombia to Callao, near the Peruvian capital Lima, without trouble.
