TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Legislative Yuan on Friday agreed to form a Constitutional Amendment Committee reportedly aimed at abolishing the Control Yuan, the nation’s top government watchdog.
The new committee will consist of 19 lawmakers from the Kuomintang, 17 from the Democratic Progressive Party, and three from the Taiwan People’s Party, based on their proportion of seats at the Legislature. The first meeting has been scheduled for Aug. 25.
The abolition of the Control Yuan and the transfer of its powers to investigate, censure, and impeach government officials to the Legislative Yuan will likely top the committee’s agenda, the Liberty Times reported. Other possible topics are lowering the minimum voting age from 20 to 18, and scrapping the Examination Yuan.
The proposal to set up the committee originated with the TPP. However, the motion received the agreement of all parties, even though they hold diverging views on the issues up for discussion.
