TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A pedestrian crossing in Taipei famous for its rainbow colors reopened to the public Saturday after receiving a fresh coat of paint.
The crossing lies in front of Ximen Mass Rapid Transit Station’s exit 6, in the bustling neighborhood of Ximending. It has been dubbed the “Rainbow Six” because it features six colors, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, a reference to the symbol of the gay rights movement.
After Taiwan in 2019 became the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, civic groups and local politicians pushed for a visible symbol of gender equality and gay rights. In addition, the neighborhood around the Red Theater across the street has been known for its gay bars and entertainment spaces.
The crossing became one of the most popular spots in Taipei for selfies. However, over the years, the colors of the rainbow started to fade, per CNA. The city shut down the location on July 8, preparing for a makeover.
The new look was unveiled on Saturday, with brighter colors and the word “TAIPEI” turned in another direction than before. Residents suggested the city should step up its maintenance of the crossing and make it a regular event.
