TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The ninth Tuo Chiang-class corvette has been named Liao Chiang, according to Liberty Times.
The ship is ready for its naming ceremony and notably does not follow the usual convention of being named after a river in Taiwan. Instead, it honors the destroyer Liao Chiang, which took part in the 1958 Second Taiwan Strait Crisis. It is the second Tuo Chiang-class ship not named after a Taiwanese river.
Meanwhile, the eighth corvette, Tan Chiang, was launched in July and is currently moored outside the shipyard in Suao for final outfitting.
The Navy is expected to have 11 corvettes by the end of next year. The ships are armed with Hsiung Feng II and III anti-ship missiles, Sea Sword II air defense missiles, and a 76 mm gun.
