TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The girls team representing Taiwan won the Babe Ruth World Series on Saturday after defeating the Puerto Rican team in the final game of the 2025 Softball 16 and Under Division.
The girls from Beitou Junior High School in Taipei stunned crowds in Florence, Alabama this weekend to win with a final score of 12 to 1 against Purto Rico’s team. This year was the first that a Taiwanese team joined the Babe Ruth Women’s Softball Championship in the U16 division, reported CNA.
Upon news of their victory, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), and Taiwan’s envoy to the US, Alexander Tah-ray Yui (俞大㵢) all sent messages to the team to congratulate them on their incredible performance.
The team’s coach Chen Mei-fen (陳美分) said the players showcased their ability at crucial moments, executing their strategies effectively. She said the team benefited greatly from a lineup with two pitchers who have experience in international competitions, per CNA.
As the only Asian team in the division this year, Chen hoped the team's victory could will draw greater global attention to Taiwan and contribute to the development of softball in Asia through future exchanges.
In addition to joining the Babe Ruth tournament, the Beitou Junior High School team is also taking an educational tour of the US. With support from the Taiwan Sport Forward Association, the girls will visit Washington DC to attend a Washington Nationals game and visit two university softball teams in Tennessee, per CNA.
