TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The East Asia Super League will open its second season on Oct. 8 with games in both Taipei and Tokyo.
This year’s 12 teams come from professional basketball leagues in Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Taiwan, Mongolia, Hong Kong, and Macau. Taiwan’s representatives are drawn from the local P. League+.
Taipei’s Heping Basketball Gymnasium will host a season-opening doubleheader featuring matchups between P. League+ teams and Japan’s B. League. The Fubon Braves will face the Utsunomiya Brex, while the Taoyuan Pilots take on the Ryukyu Golden Kings, per EASL.
“When searching for a tip-off location, why not choose two beautiful, basketball-crazed cities?” said EASL CEO Henry Kerins. He added that the Taipei doubleheader will recreate a semifinal from the inaugural season, while Tokyo will host the debut of two new EASL teams.
The Utsunomiya Brex, the winningest team in B. League history, are led by veteran star Hiejima Makoto and will face a Braves squad that narrowly lost in Game 7 of the P. League+ championship series.
The second game will pit P. League+ champions Taoyuan Pilots against Japan’s Emperor’s Cup champions, the Ryukyu Golden Kings. The Pilots won their last meeting with the Golden Kings 71-64.
Tip-off for the Braves vs. Brex is set for 6:30 p.m., followed by the Pilots vs. Golden Kings at 8:30 p.m. Tickets for both games will go on sale in early September.
