TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s stock market rebounded Monday after an early drop sparked by US tariff concerns, closing higher as TSMC hit a new intraday high.
The Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index (TAIEX) gained 114.24 points to close at 24,135.5. Turnover totaled NT$426 billion (US$13.2 billion), per CNA and CTEE.
TSMC rose 0.43% to close at NT$1,180 after reaching an intraday peak of NT$1,195. Investors are watching its two-day board meeting on a 2-nanometer technology leak case and the US proposal for semiconductor tariffs.
Foxconn gained 1.8% to NT$198, while MediaTek edged up 0.37% to NT$1,355. Foxconn Technology hit the daily trading limit after announcing plans to invest US$1 billion in US-based manufacturing. US President Donald Trump has proposed a 100% tariff on foreign-made semiconductors, with possible exemptions for companies building factories in the US.
Robotics-related shares advanced after the World Robot Conference opened Friday in Beijing. Aurotek and Chieftek Precision both rose more than 4%, while Canon, Kenmec Mechanical Engineering, and Abico posted smaller gains.
Server maker Wiwynn hit the daily limit of NT$3,175 after reporting record first-half earnings per share of NT$117.93, more than double last year’s NT$53.77.
Drone-related stocks also climbed on the Ministry of National Defense’s NT$50 billion procurement plan, with Thunder Tiger up 8.42% to NT$109.50 and Coretronic up 3.72% to NT$94.70.
CTBC Securities Investment Service Manager Chen Po-chou (陳柏州) said stronger-than-expected Q2 earnings and higher capital spending from the four major US cloud providers continue to drive investment in TSMC, its equipment suppliers, and AI server components. However, he said whether companies qualify for tariff exemptions will be a key factor, potentially leading to uneven stock performance.
Chen advised a selective investment approach, noting that Apple’s multi-billion-dollar US investment and reported tariff exemptions on some semiconductor products could also benefit consumer electronics stocks.
