TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Cabinet held a meeting Monday to prepare for Typhoon Podul, instructing ministries and local governments to take precautionary measures ahead of the storm’s arrival.
The Ministry of the Interior was directed to oversee local governments in evacuating and sheltering residents whose homes were damaged by Typhoon Danas and subsequent heavy rains, as well as other disaster-vulnerable groups, according to a Cabinet press release. Local governments were also urged to issue public advisories on securing signboards, scaffolding, and other hanging objects.
To address potential strong winds, heavy rain, and landslides, the Cabinet asked national parks, scenic areas, and recreational farms to consider closing as a precaution and to enforce mountain area restrictions when necessary. It also instructed the Ocean Affairs Council, the Ministry of the Interior, and local governments to step up efforts to keep the public away from dangerous coastal areas.
Ministries have been told to declare maritime warning zones within 12 nautical miles of the coast and urge all vessels to return to port. The Ministries of Economic Affairs and the Interior were also tasked with improving flood prevention and drainage facilities to protect low-lying coastal areas.
Typhoon Podul is expected to reach Taiwan around noon Tuesday.
