TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Wistron on Tuesday announced it will donate one million GPU computing hours, valued at NT$150 million (US$5 million), to Taiwanese startups and research institutions.
Wistron Chair Lin Hsien-ming (林憲銘) said the goal is to encourage the local ecosystem to harness AI computing power for concrete projects, including proof-of-concept work and applied services, per CNA. An independent committee will review applications, and recipients will present their results to ensure maximum impact.
The donation program will open for applications in the fourth quarter, with usage beginning early next year, per Wealth Magazine. Lin said the company may increase the available computing hours if demand exceeds expectations.
Highlighting global innovation models, Lin praised Israel’s startup environment, noting how mandatory military service equips citizens with skills that foster resilience and creativity. He drew parallels for Taiwan, encouraging patience and persistence as crucial to fostering innovation.
Lin also encouraged startups to be bold, avoid settling for current conditions, and aim higher to drive transformative change. He emphasized dedication and sincerity as key to achieving early, meaningful breakthroughs.
Wistron said the initiative aims to accelerate Taiwan’s AI development by providing critical resources and inspiring startups to explore new frontiers.
