TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Podul is forecast to bring torrential rain to Hualien, Taitung, and southern Taiwan on Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Administration.
The typhoon is expected to make landfall in Taitung around noon, per CNA. Heavy rain, high waves, and gusty winds began affecting Lanyu early Wednesday morning. As of 10 a.m., nearly 260 households on the island have experienced power outages.
Showers and strong gusty winds are also expected in northern and central Taiwan, as well as Kinmen and Matsu, with a possibility of localized heavy rain in mountainous regions.
By Wednesday evening, the typhoon’s center is expected to pass near Penghu. While the wind and rain will gradually subside, Penghu and Kinmen are still forecast to experience significant wind and rainfall.
Work and classes are suspended on Wednesday in Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Hualien, Taitung, and Penghu. In Nantou’s Renai Township, work and classes were suspended starting at 10 a.m. Taipei has not been significantly impacted by the typhoon.
From Thursday through the weekend, Taiwan will experience mostly sunny to partly cloudy weather, with temperatures ranging from 25 C to 34 C. Localized afternoon showers or thunderstorms are expected in mountainous areas.
