TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s new vehicle-mounted Hellfire missile system scored a direct hit on a maritime target during live-fire tests, according to a Military News Agency video published Thursday.
The Hellfire missile was originally developed as an air-to-ground weapon for AH-64E Apache helicopters, per CNA. Engineers integrated the helicopter’s missile launch and fire control systems into a land-based platform, per Liberty Times.
The mobile system offers covert deployment, rapid reaction, and flexible strike options, the ministry said. It is designed to enhance anti-armor and air defense capabilities in both defensive and offensive operations.
Colonel Su (蘇) of the 209th Arsenal said the weapon is tailored for asymmetric warfare, especially against armored threats in wartime. Adapting the air-launched Hellfire to land operations required significant modifications to firing logic, he added.
One of the main technical hurdles was ensuring the missile could accurately strike targets from varied terrain. Adjustments were made to account for differences in elevation, line-of-sight, and targeting stability.
