TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung City Government said that it will launch an electronic notification system for parking fees in September, using license plate recognition and mobile payments to reduce the need for paper notices.
The city’s Transportation Bureau held a press conference on Wednesday to explain how the system works, per CNA. The agency said the license plate recognition equipment will automatically record vehicle entry and exit times, then calculate the parking duration and corresponding fees.
The bureau added that it will partner with 10 mobile payment providers to offer payment services through the system. Users will also be able to pay at physical service counters, through bank account deductions, or via their telecom bills.
It noted that all city-operated parking lots are already equipped with signage displaying parking fees and hours of operation.
Yeh Chao-fu (葉昭甫), director of the bureau, said the city government plans to add 27,000 more parking spaces by 2030. Parking data will also be integrated with the city’s transportation app, allowing users to access parking availability and payment services.
To encourage wider use of the system, from September through March 2026, users who pay via mobile payments will be eligible for a parking discount of up to 40%.
Since 2022, local governments in Greater Taipei have promoted similar systems for roadside parking. Users can register their license plate numbers online to receive text message notifications, with payment options available via mobile apps or automatic bank deductions. Last year, the Kaohsiung City Government also adopted the policy.
