TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A new poll released by the Mainland Affairs Council shows most Taiwanese believe the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to infiltrate the nation are intensifying.
According to the poll, 65.5% believe the CCP has been ramping up its efforts to infiltrate Taiwan in the past few years, per CNA. Slightly more — 66.5% — believe the government should increase its scrutiny of Chinese people who apply to come to Taiwan for exchanges.
At 83.7%, an overwhelming majority of Taiwanese disapproved of China’s “one country, two systems” framework for annexing Taiwan. Meanwhile, 86.4% of citizens sampled supported maintaining the cross-strait status quo.
Regarding recent policies that require Taiwan’s civil servants to get approval for trips to China, Hong Kong, or Macau, 66.2% of those polled expressed support for the stiffened requirements. When it came to military personnel, civil servants, or teachers holding Chinese identification documents, 74.5% considered it unacceptable.
Commissioned by the Mainland Affairs Council and carried out by National Chengchi University Election Research Center, the poll sampled 1,075 Taiwanese over 20 years old by telephone between Aug. 14-18. It had a 95% reliability rating and a ±2.99% sampling error.
