TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chunghwa Post said Saturday it will end nighttime delivery of domestic registered mail starting Jan. 1.
The postal service explained that demand for evening delivery has fallen, per CNA. It added that providing the service at low rates has created a gap between labor costs and revenue.
Officials noted the move aligns with public mailing habits and trends in the logistics market, including increased use of iPost locker collection services. The change will affect a small number of users, as Chunghwa Post reported the monthly volume of nighttime registered letters averages just 3,000, about 0.01% of total registered mail, meaning most customers will see no disruption.
Currently, registered mail is delivered once daily between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., with nighttime delivery from roughly 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., per UDN. Busy customers could opt for evening delivery and pay an extra NT$7 (23 cents) per letter or NT$80 for expedited mail.
For those who previously relied on nighttime delivery, Chunghwa Post suggested alternatives such as redirecting mail to workplaces, relatives’ addresses, or using corporate mailing services.
