TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — With the conclusion of the Great Recall and the referendum on nuclear power, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) met with former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Sunday to discuss political issues.
In a Facebook post, Tsai encouraged everyone to continue their support for the Lai administration amid a challenging political landscape. Lai also shared a post recounting their meeting at the Presidential Office Building and pledged to be a driving force for progress.
In her post, Tsai said, “We have only one country,” and called for people to unite behind the president and vice-president during difficult times. She said that the trio exchanged their views on important domestic and international developments.
Despite the outcome of the recall and nuclear referendum, Lai said that the value of democracy lies in enabling diverse voices to work together to forge greater consensus across the country. He said he is committed to working “hand in hand” with everyone to lead Taiwan towards a better future.
Following the results of the Great Recall, Lai announced on Saturday that he will initiate a Cabinet reshuffle to increase government efficiency so that the administration can better respond to the concerns and needs of the public.
The nuclear referendum failed to reach the threshold to pass despite voter support. In response, Lai said he will order a safety review to consider the potential impact of restarting nuclear facilities in Taiwan.
