TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A British traveler was arrested for trying to smuggle marijuana into Taiwan at Taoyuan International Airport on Friday.
According to Taipei Customs, the passenger arrived from Bangkok around 9 p.m. and entered through the green channel without making a declaration, per CNA. He was stopped for inspection but refused to open his luggage and attempted to flee the restricted area.
Three customs officers and one Aviation Police Bureau officer subdued the man. Authorities later found 14.37 kilograms of marijuana, classified as a category 2 narcotic, in his checked baggage.
Taipei Customs said this was the fourth drug-smuggling case at the airport since May. In response, it has created a task force to adjust inspection routes and coordinate with aviation police.
The agency commended its officers for their swift response and praised the cooperation with the Aviation Police Bureau. It also warned travelers not to bring drugs into Taiwan and pledged to intensify anti-smuggling efforts.
The British citizen is suspected of violating the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act, and the case has been transferred to the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau for further investigation, per NOWnews. The passenger could face a prison term of 10 years to life and a fine of up to NT$15 million (US$492,000).
