TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – In a report about the People’s Liberation Army submitted to the Legislative Yuan on Friday, the Ministry of National Defense described how China could turn drills into an attack on Taiwan.
The report noted how Beijing had intensified pressure on Taiwan in recent years by organizing maneuvers and sending military vessels and aircraft closer to the country, per CNA. Anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) capabilities with aircraft carrier groups moving into the Western Pacific east of Taiwan could turn the Taiwan Strait into a Chinese “internal sea” by 2035, the Liberty Times reported.
The ministry also identified four ways in which China could turn apparent large-scale exercises into attacks against Taiwan. In the first case, an attack could occur when Chinese navy, coast guard, and militia ships approached Taiwan’s restricted waters.
Exercises extending into areas between the first and second island chains with a long-term presence of its navy and air force, and the demarcation of no-sail zones close to Taiwan to conduct drills are two more strategies China might follow. A fourth strategy might be to deploy coast guard and militia vessels to stop and board, seize, and block ships close to Taiwan ports.
