TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The American Institute in Taiwan on Thursday introduced a co-branded Kuai Kuai snack honoring Flying Tigers member Jerome Simon to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
After Beijing staged a large-scale military parade on Wednesday, AIT Director Raymond Greene posted on Facebook about attending the funeral of the last surviving Flying Tigers member, Captain John Sun Chu, per ETtoday. He wrote, “Their sacrifices not only protected lives and liberty but also forged a bond of friendship and solidarity that lasts to this day.”
In a Thursday post, AIT said featuring Simon’s portrait on the packaging underscores “the spirit of partnership and cooperation between the United States and Taiwan.” It added that on the anniversary of the war’s end, “we must remember the stories of the Flying Tigers, which highlight that in the Indo-Pacific, our futures are bound together, and we share a vision of peace, stability, prosperity, security.”
The Ministry of National Defense said in March that three Kuai Kuai co-branded products would be released, per CNA. The first features Simon, emphasizing the “deep friendship and cooperation between the US and Taiwan.”
The second depicts Yang Huimin (楊惠敏) delivering the national flag to troops besieged in the Sihang Warehouse, with a timeline graphic of wartime events. The third is a Kuai Kuai Peacock Snack showing naval personnel defending Taiwan’s maritime territory.
