TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) will decide after the weekend whether he will put up NT$70 million (US$2.28 million) bail, reports said Friday.
In the morning, Taipei District Court announced a bail decision, paving the way for the TPP founder to end more than a year in detention. The court also granted bail of NT$30 million to KMT Taipei City Councilor Ying Hsiao-wei (應曉薇).
Ko and Hsiao are the only key defendants in the Core Pacific City scandal still detained. The court said they could be released since the questioning of defendants and witnesses has been completed.
However, a statement by Ko’s attorneys said that during a meeting in the afternoon, Ko told them he still needed to think about bail, the Liberty Times reported. He would tell them his decision on Monday morning, the statement said.
The delay is due to Ko’s reluctance to borrow money, per UDN. His wife, Chen Pei-chi (陳佩琪), has reportedly already wired NT$50 million to a designated bank account, leaving NT$20 million still to be paid.
Once released on bail, Ko and Ying will not be allowed to move addresses, travel overseas, or sail out to sea for eight months. Both will be equipped with GPS tracking devices and have to stay away from other defendants and witnesses in the case.
Prosecutors said Ko accepted funds from the developer of the Core Pacific City project during his term as mayor to expand the building’s floor area ratio. Ying allegedly also accepted money to exert pressure on city officials in the case.
