TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to security during the commissioning ceremony for the 1,000-tonne Coast Guard patrol vessel Hualien in Keelung on Monday.
“Peace is never taken for granted — it must be safeguarded together,” Hsiao said, per the Presidential Office. She added that Taiwan must strengthen its own security and defence to ensure stable economic and social development.
Hsiao said the Hualien embodies that spirit at sea, “serving as the first line of defense in safeguarding our nation’s maritime borders.”
She also said the government would continue advancing the next phase of Coast Guard shipbuilding to enhance fleet capabilities and bolster maritime defenses. Acknowledging collective effort, she noted, “National security is not the responsibility of a single ship but a defensive line built together by courageous and committed people.”
Hsiao also attended the naming ceremony for the fifth 1,000-tonne patrol vessel, Penghu.
