TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tromboranga Salsa Orchestra returns to Taipei on Sunday, Sept. 28, as part of its international “Vivela” tour with a show at HanaSpace Taipei.
The 9-piece group is part of a new generation of independent Latin orchestras committed to “salsa dura,” a high-energy style rooted in urban centers such as New York City. The sound relies on trombones, piano, bass, and percussion, and emphasizes instrumental drive over vocals — a contrast with the more pop-leaning “salsa romantica.”
The genre took shape in 1970s New York and was popularized by Fania Records, which signed bandleaders such as Willie Colon and Johnny Pacheco, along with contemporaries like the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. Highly orchestrated arrangements leave space for improvisation and creative interplay.
Tromboranga’s Taipei stop is part of its broader “Vivela” itinerary, which includes multiple dates in Japan. The band’s dance-floor appeal comes from strong percussion, energetic solos, and tempo changes that encourage expressive movement — a favorite among dancers who prefer jazz-influenced 1970s sounds over softer salsa romantica.
The ensemble is led by Joaquin Arteaga, who composes and arranges much of the repertoire and drives the group’s raw, live sound. Featured artists include Cuban lead vocalist Diego Coppinger — a former star of Havana’s Tropicana Show and winner of Buscando al Sonero — and Colombian pianist-arranger Rafa Madagascar, who draws on Cali and Colombian salsa traditions.
Tromboranga has toured widely, with regular US stops at festivals and clubs in New York, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles, as well as frequent dates in Mexico and European capitals including Amsterdam, London, and Paris. Their songs — “Agua que va a caer,” “El mundo al reves,” “Kumbele Kutimba,” “El cuero del tambor,” and “Baila Africa” — are staples for DJs and dancers in competitions and viral challenges on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
The group made a strong impression in Taipei during its 2016 visit and returns with a bigger, more interactive show and new material. The concert is presented by Party Taiwan, Latinos Taiwan, and ICRT and will be hosted by DJ Cola.
