TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Lin Chao-hong (林昭宏), director-general of the foreign ministry’s Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said Taiwanese travelers and nationals in Nepal are safe.
Two tour groups totaling 47 people have returned to Taiwan following protests that began last Monday, Lin said at a press conference. MOFA raised its travel advisory to orange on Sept. 10, urging citizens to avoid nonessential travel.
Frustrated by corruption and a lack of opportunity, young Nepalese set fire to multiple government buildings, and former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli stepped down. Sushila Karki was sworn in as interim prime minister on Sept. 12.
The Taiwan representative office in India, which also covers Nepal, has been instructed to keep monitoring the situation and maintain contact with Taiwanese residents still in the country. More than 10 Taiwanese nationals currently in Nepal have been reported safe.
Lin said major cities have largely returned to normal and that Kathmandu’s airport has resumed operations.
