TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5 earthquake struck the Taiwan Strait 93.9 km east of Kinmen at a depth of 17.2 km at 6:56 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Central Weather Administration.
The earthquake's intensity was highest in Kinmen, Penghu, Changhua, Yunlin, and Chiayi, where it measured 2 on Taiwan's intensity scale. It measured 1 in Matsu, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Nantou, Taichung, and Tainan.
CWA Seismological Center Director Wu Chien-fu (吳健富) said the earthquake was the result of a collision between the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. Wu said, “It is relatively rare, but it occurs occasionally,” per UDN.
Earthquakes in the Taiwan Strait are shallow and occur infrequently, according to Wu. However, he admitted this may be partly due to the lack of seismic stations in the area before 1993.
