TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — MediaTek released its 5G flagship chip, Dimensity 9500, on Monday, calling it a leap in performance with lower power consumption to support its push for a 40% share of the global smartphone market.
Analysts predict that soon four out of every ten mobile phone users worldwide will use MediaTek chips. The company’s main rival in the Android market is Qualcomm, which covers about 72% of all phones, though MediaTek has recently made major gains among Chinese brands, per UDN.
MediaTek President Joe Chen (陳冠州) said the new chip targets high-end flagship models. The Dimensity 9500 uses TSMC’s N3P process and integrates a full-core CPU, GPU, NPU, and ISP.
MediaTek said the 9500 delivers “super power and super cooling,” with single-core performance up 32% and multi-core up 17% over the previous generation. Peak multi-core power consumption is reduced by 37%, and the super-core uses 55% less power at the same performance level.
The first phones with the chip are expected to launch in the fourth quarter, starting with China’s Vivo X300.
MediaTek said the Dimensity 9500 also features a next-generation Mali G1-Ultra GPU and introduces several graphics technologies to deliver smoother gameplay and AAA-grade visuals, aiming for a console-like experience on mobile.
MediaTek Corporate Senior Vice President J.C. Hsu (徐敬全) said the company’s market share has been rising year by year. Beyond growing adoption by Chinese brands, MediaTek is also gaining globally and is gradually being used in tablets.
Hsu said smartphone growth this year will be modest, with only a 1%–2% increase. While China’s market performed better than expected in the first half due to subsidies, that has eroded future demand; he expects annual growth of just 1%–2% next year.
