TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — While Taiwanese trawlers returned to port to shelter from Typhoon Ragasa, Chinese fishing vessels were operating in restricted waters near Kinmen, Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration said Tuesday.
As the storm intensified Monday night, the CGA first spotted a commercial ship lingering offshore outside Kinmen’s Liaoluo Port, per CNA. Later, it detected suspected Chinese fishing boats crossing into nearby restricted waters.
Patrol ship PP-10081 left port at 9:50 p.m. and located 10 Chinese trawlers southeast of Muyu Island, the CGA said, adding the vessel drove them out of Kinmen waters.
The Coast Guard condemned the trawlers for endangering their crews during a typhoon and risking rescuers’ safety if an accident occurred. The Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch said it will continue expelling Chinese vessels from restricted waters when conditions allow and after the typhoon passes.
