TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s foreign minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) urged the United Nations to recognize Taiwan in an op-ed published by US outlet Newsmax.
According to CNA, Lin wrote that “now is the time for the United Nations to recognize Taiwan.” He also played on the phrase “chip in,” highlighting Taiwan’s role in semiconductors while calling on countries to “chip in” support for Taiwan’s inclusion.
Lin centered his argument on UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 (1971), which recognized the People’s Republic of China as China’s representative at the UN and removed the prior seat, but does not state that Taiwan is part of the PRC or grant Beijing authority to represent Taiwan in UN bodies, he said.
Taiwan has been excluded from UN agencies and much of the international system. As the UN marks its 80th anniversary this month, Lin appealed to member states to correct what he called a persistent misapplication of 2758, restore fairness, and ensure Taiwan is not sidelined in efforts such as the Sustainable Development Goals pledge to leave no one behind.
