TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The US position on Taiwan has not changed, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei (蕭光偉) said Tuesday, responding to a report that China is pressuring Washington to oppose Taiwan independence.
As US President Donald Trump seeks to finalize an economic deal with China, Chinese leader Xi Jinping will demand that Washington formally state its opposition to Taiwan independence, according to the Wall Street Journal.
At a press conference Tuesday, Hsiao said the US opposes any unilateral attempts to alter the cross-strait status quo. He stressed that China’s actions continue to pose the greatest threat to peace in the Taiwan Strait.
Hsiao reiterated that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other but exist on equal footing, which he said is an objective fact and reality.
He added that joint statements issued at the US–Japan–South Korea foreign ministers’ meeting and the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting during the UN General Assembly last week reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and rejected attempts to change the status quo through force or coercion.
Hsiao said Taiwan will continue to safeguard the status quo and work with like-minded countries to ensure regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
