TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) said Friday he was grateful to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. for gifting him a chip wafer to mark test production of 2 nanometer chips at its plant in the city.
Chen said he would put the wafer in the lobby of Kaohsiung City Hall where the public could admire it, per CNA. A delegation from TSMC presented him with the wafer during a recent visit, the mayor said.
Since announcing its investments in Kaohsiung, TSMC’s mass production tests for 2 nm wafers have advanced faster than its original timetable, according to Chen. He said the city would continue to expand its “semiconductor S corridor,” an S-shaped area from Tainan to Pingtung for high-tech industries.
The corridor includes manufacturers of advanced equipment and materials related to the semiconductor industry. Kaohsiung wants to be at the center of the supply chain linking upstream and downstream manufacturers, Chen said.
