TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The European Union said United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not mention Taiwan and only transferred China’s UN seat.
A spokesperson for the European External Action Service was cited by CNA on Monday as saying that the text of the resolution was very brief, only about 150 words, and did not mention “Taiwan.” It simply said that the UN seat should be transferred from “the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek” to “the representatives of the Government of the People's Republic of China.”
The spokesperson said that pragmatic solutions should be adopted to enable Taiwan's meaningful participation in international affairs, as long as they are consistent with organizational rules or conventions, the EU's “one-China” policy, and EU policy objectives. The EU is committed to exploring ways to include Taiwan in areas where it can contribute its technological expertise and add value.
The spokesperson said cross-strait tensions should be resolved through dialogue, and maintaining proper channels of communication is crucial. The representative stressed the importance of restraint.
Following China’s unilateral changes to the operation of several air routes, including activation of the W121 connecting path along the M503 flight route on July 7, the spokesperson said the EU believes cross-strait consultations should take place before making any such adjustments in the aviation sector.
