TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s stock market retreated on Wednesday, ending a three-day run of closing record highs, as semiconductor, electronics, and biotech shares led declines.
The Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index, or TAIEX, fell 212.13 points to close at 26,999.82 on turnover of NT$452.5 billion (US$14.8 billion). Investor sentiment was affected by Oracle’s weaker-than-expected gross margin in its AI cloud business, according to CNA and CTEE.
TSMC closed down 1.39% at NT$1,415. In after-hours trading, a block trade of 10 lots, or 10,000 shares, at NT$1,570 marked the sixth consecutive day that after-hours transactions set a new high, according to CTEE.
MediaTek rose 0.75% to NT$1,335. Foxconn declined 1.53% to NT$225, and Delta Electronics fell 0.61% to NT$981.
Shares in the plastics sector recorded gains following a plant fire at US-based Dow Chemical, which may affect Asian polyethylene prices. Formosa Plastics, Usi, and Asia Polymer, Formosa Petrochemical and Shih-Kuen Plastics all advanced.
Memory stocks were mixed. Winbond Electronics declined 3.28% to NT$41.25 on the session's highest turnover of over 460,000 lots
Nanya Technology slipped 0.44% to NT$90.8. Adata reached its daily trading limit at NT$108.5.
Consumer electronics maker HTC, which reported its lowest combined revenue for the first three quarters, fell 8.36% to NT$57. In contrast, storage solutions provider Innodisk reached the daily trading limit at NT$368.5, following record quarterly and year-to-date revenue.
Analysts attributed part of the market volatility to Oracle’s AI cloud margins, noting that TAIEX is testing the 27,000-point level. Investor attention is now focused on TSMC’s September revenue report on Thursday and an upcoming briefing by Largan Precision.
First Capital Management Vice President Liu Cheng-yu (留政鈺) highlighted potential opportunities in the market, citing AI-driven cloud server expansion, tight supply of high-end printed circuit board materials, and growing demand for edge computing, which may support industrial control-related stocks.
