TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Nvidia’s plan to build its Taiwan headquarters in Beitou-Shilin Technology Park has stalled over land rights issues, prompting it to ask the Ministry of Economic Affairs to identify sites that meet its needs.
Nvidia had planned to use the T17 and T18 lots, but Shin Kong Life Insurance already holds the land development rights, per CNA. The Taipei City Government proposed two options: allowing Shin Kong to complete construction and later transfer the property, or terminating the contract and reassigning land rights directly to Nvidia.
Nvidia rejected the first option, while Shin Kong has yet to set conditions for the second. The MOEA said it welcomes Nvidia and other major international companies to establish headquarters in Taiwan and has consistently provided assistance.
The ministry confirmed receiving Nvidia’s letter on Tuesday and will identify suitable sites, including in Taipei, and respond by Oct. 24. It added that it will fully support Nvidia in establishing its overseas corporate headquarters in Taiwan.
The ministry said that Nvidia maintains close cooperation with Taiwan’s supply chain and is one of the companies selected under its Enterprise Innovation Program. Nvidia has already established an AI innovation research and development center in Neihu and built the supercomputer Taipei-1, offering part of its computing power free to Taiwan’s academic institutions, research organizations, businesses, and startups.
Regarding the T17 and T18 lots, the ministry said the Ministry of the Interior notified the Taipei City Government on July 16 that the project may proceed under Article 44 of the Land Expropriation Act. The ministry stressed that the central government has repeatedly and publicly demonstrated its commitment to assisting the project.
