TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Underprivileged residents of Guangfu Township will start receiving home appliances and scooters next week, reports said Friday.
As the cleanup in the wake of the deadly Sept. 23 Mataian barrier lake overflow nears completion, the Central Emergency Operation Center collected washing machines, refrigerators, and other large home appliances for the victims, per CNA.
Distribution to low-income families will start next week, with the remainder being awarded through a drawing. The Hualien County Government will distribute a separate batch of home appliances via the local township government office.
The minister without portfolio in charge of operations in Guangfu, Chi Lien-cheng (季連成), said 30 associations and corporations, including Foxconn Technology, had donated 3,000 large home appliances and 300 scooters. The 200 most seriously affected low-income households would be the first to receive the items, with the remainder to be distributed by the heads of seven villages according to the results of a drawing. The larger items would be directly transported to the recipients’ homes and installed by professionals, Chi said.
With a three-day public holiday starting Friday, 12,000 volunteers arrived in Guangfu by train before noon, he added. Chi said 1,800 had been tasked with the filling of 65,000 sandbags, CNA reported.
The cleanup of homes outside of the worst-affected areas was expected to be completed during the holiday. Chi predicted 15 kilometers of gutters, or half the total, could be cleaned up by the end of Friday.
