TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) expressed gratitude to the US Congress for its bipartisan support of Taiwan and efforts to strengthen Taiwan-US security cooperation.
The House of Representatives approved its version of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act in September, which authorizes up to US$1 billion (NT$30.70 billion) in security assistance for Taiwan and creates a defense technology partnership between Taiwan and the Pentagon.
The Senate passed its NDAA last Thursday. The bill calls for Taiwan’s participation in RIMPAC and urges the joint development and production of unmanned aerial vehicles. It also includes US$1 billion in military aid to Taiwan under the Taiwan Security Cooperation Initiative.
Lin said continued bipartisan legislative action demonstrates firm support for Taiwan, per CNA. Citing President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) National Day address, the foreign minister said Taiwan would keep bolstering its defense capabilities to achieve “peace through strength.”
The ministry said it would closely monitor the bill’s progress and maintain communication with Congress and the Trump administration to deepen the Taiwan-US partnership.
