TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Legislative Yuan is set to approve at third reading on Friday a measure to issue an NT$10,000 (US$325) cash handout, clearing the final legislative hurdle to releasing the funds.
On Sept. 11, the Cabinet passed an NT$550 billion special relief act with NT$20 billion reserved for future industrial support, per CNA. Of the budgeted funds, NT$236 billion is earmarked for the payout.
Joint meetings of the Legislative Yuan’s Finance, Interior, Foreign Affairs and National Defense, Economic, Education and Culture, and Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene committees were held Oct. 8–9. The committees preliminarily approved the special budget, including the payment, but it still required cross-party negotiations.
During Tuesday morning’s negotiations, the ruling and opposition parties agreed the Legislative Yuan would handle the special budget on Friday, complete the third reading, and not submit it for reconsideration. No policy questioning will take place that day, and the session will address only non-negotiable proposals, with no ad hoc proposals handled.
As a result, Friday’s vote to approve the cash stimulus is expected to be largely a formality, with no debate or questioning.
Cabinet Spokesperson Michelle Lee (李慧芝) said on Oct. 2 that the disbursement process must begin within one month of the budget’s official promulgation, per SET News. She added that once the Legislative Yuan completes its review, passes the third reading, and the president promulgates the budget, the government will “implement the cash payout as quickly as possible.”
