TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Finance Minister Chuang Tsui-yun (莊翠雲) said Thursday the government will begin distributing NT$10,000 (US$326) cash handouts in early November via direct deposits.
The Legislative Yuan is scheduled to review and vote on the special budget for the cash handouts on Friday, per CNA. Lawmakers from across party lines reached a consensus on Wednesday to complete the third reading without filing for reconsideration.
During a Legislative Yuan session on Thursday, KMT Legislator Lai Shyh-bao (賴士葆) asked about the distribution schedule. Chuang explained that since there are multiple payment methods, the ministry must first verify the list of those receiving direct deposits, register residents in remote areas, and allow online registration.
Chuang said payments could begin in early November once preparations are completed. He stressed the cash distribution process must ensure safety, accuracy, and avoid duplication or omission.
The ministry plans to hold a press conference on the same day the president promulgates the budget to announce the timeline for distributing the funds. Chuang said the first round of payments will go to direct deposit recipients, with the remaining handouts distributed with other methods.
She estimated that compiling and verifying the payment lists would take around five working days. Under Article 9 of the special act, which provides the legal framework for the cash handouts, the government must begin issuing the payments within one month after the special budget is promulgated and complete the task within seven months.
According to the ministry plan, there will be five ways to collect the handouts. These include online registration for bank transfer, ATM withdrawal, post office withdrawal, direct deposit for designated groups, and roster distribution for those unable to use the other methods.
The Cabinet has established an inter-ministerial task force to oversee the cash payout program. The group includes six subcommittees overseen by five government agencies.
