TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s defense ministry said it is procuring new air-defense weapons and integrating existing domestic systems via an automated C5ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance).
In his National Day address, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced a “T-dome” air defense network to bolster protection from airborne threats.
Linking various systems will create a multi-sensor/multi-shooter kill network that can select appropriate interceptors against specific threats, creating a multilayered, tightly knit air defense shield, the ministry said in a report released on Tuesday, per CNA.
The ministry also said the Air Force is reorganizing units to accommodate air defense missiles, ground radars, and MQ-9B SeaGuardian UAVs to strengthen ISR and early warning capabilities.
There are plans to establish AI-assisted battlefield management platforms to form an intelligent network and make timely operational decisions, the ministry said. Introducing AI into the military will enable real-time intelligence collection and analysis, it said.
For low-altitude threats, Taiwan fields the Avenger system, Antelope system, Stinger missiles, 35-mm twin gun SkyGuard system, and the T82 200mm twin-mounted gun system. For low- to medium-altitude threats, Taiwan deploys Sparrow missiles and the TC-2N ground-launched Sky Sword II system. It is also purchasing National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems from the US.
For medium- to high-altitude threats, Taiwan uses the Sky Bow and Patriot missile systems. To respond to high-altitude threats, Taiwan has begun producing Strong Bow missiles.
Some of Taiwan’s radar systems include the Bee Eye mobile radars and PAVE PAWS long-range radar.
