TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US Senators Ted Cruz, Todd Young, and Marsha Blackburn introduced the Taiwan Symbols of Sovereignty (Taiwan SOS) Act on Tuesday.
The bill calls on the secretaries of state and defense to allow the Taiwan government and armed forces to display official emblems, unit insignia, and symbols, including the national flag, according to Cruz’s office. Under the act, Taiwanese military and government officials would be permitted to wear uniforms at ceremonies or events at the state and defense departments.
Additionally, the act would permit the appearances of Taiwanese officials in uniform on state and defense department social media “promoting engagements with Taiwan.”
Cruz said that “there has been broad, explicit bipartisan support” for removing prohibitions on displaying Taiwanese symbols. “China is committed to eroding Taiwan’s global status, and the United States should be just as committed to strengthening it.”
Young said the bill would deepen US-Taiwan relations and counter Chinese coercion toward Taiwan. “Taiwan’s government, military, and people deserve to be treated with the same respect and recognition we afford other countries,” he said.
Blackburn affirmed Taiwan’s sovereignty and said, “The US should not support Communist China’s efforts to undermine its independence by restricting Taiwanese diplomats and service members from displaying their flag.
“The Taiwan SOS Act would make it clear the United States firmly stands with Taiwan.”
