TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — China’s Taiwan Affairs Office has said it is open to boosting high-level exchanges with the KMT to build on “existing common political foundations” and "enhance political mutual trust.”
The statement came from TAO Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian during a regular press conference on Wednesday. It was made in response to a reporter’s question about KMT Chair-elect Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文), who has expressed a desire to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, per CNA.
Cheng most recently shared her wish to see Xi in a radio interview on Monday, during which she said, “Of course I want to meet with Xi.” She added that she would be willing to meet with anyone who could help resolve cross-strait conflicts.
During the TAO briefing, a Taiwanese reporter said that Cheng has previously described Beijing’s “1992 consensus” as a “passcode” and asked Zhu whether TAO would arrange for Cheng — who agrees with the consensus — to visit.
Zhu did not directly answer the question, according to the report. However, she went on to praise the KMT in response to another question about whether the party should establish a new office in China to assist Taiwanese there.
On Tuesday, Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) said he hoped a meeting between Cheng Li-wun and Xi Jinping happens, so long as it does not violate Taiwan’s sovereignty.
