TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara Minoru said Wednesday that Taiwan is an “important partner” and “close friend," CNA reported Thursday.
Kihara added that Tokyo plans to deepen cooperation with Taiwan under the administration of Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae. He also described the Taiwan-Japan relationship as “non-governmental but practical.”
Japan and Taiwan share common values such as freedom, democracy, and the rule of law, Kihara said. He pointed out that both countries enjoy close economic ties and cultural exchanges.
Kihara also addressed Japan’s ties with China. He said Tokyo will continue to build a “constructive and stable” relationship while reducing tensions and unresolved issues through dialogue and cooperation.
According to NHK, Kihara was appointed chief cabinet secretary on Tuesday, after Takaichi became prime minister. He also serves in the House of Representatives.
On Tuesday, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) congratulated Takaichi Sanae on becoming Japan’s first female prime minister. He expressed hope for closer Taiwan–Japan relations and thanked Japan for its aid after the nation’s recent natural disasters.
According to The Diplomat, Takaichi is “widely seen as a pro-Taiwan leader.” Her accession has raised expectations in Taipei for a continued strong partnership amid rising tensions with China.
Japan and Taiwan have maintained close unofficial relations since Tokyo switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1972.
