TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Austria has agreed to accept the validity of Taiwan’s international driving permit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday.
The change followed complaints by Taiwanese last year that they were unable to drive a vehicle in the European country, per CNA. Austria’s transportation ministry said the Taiwanese international permit was not valid, making it impossible for short-term visitors to drive.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that following talks with the Austrian government, with its office in Taipei, and with the help of the Taiwan mission in Vienna, Austria issued an executive order this month to allow the use of the international driving permit.
Anyone with the permit and with the original of a valid Taiwan driver’s license was now allowed to drive a vehicle in Austria, the ministry said. As a result, the ministry would ask the Ministry of Transportation to give reciprocal treatment to Austrian drivers in Taiwan.
The move will help business and tourism between the two countries, while also boosting exchanges and promoting friendship, according to the ministry.
