TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan-Japan ties will remain strong under new Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, the National Security Bureau said on Monday.
An NSB report on the security implications of Takaichi as prime minister said her administration will strengthen Japan’s defense and “demonstrate a pro-US, pro-Taiwan stance,” CNA reported.
Takaichi has emphasized that Taiwan is an important friend and partner and warned of China’s military threat, NSB said. She has also reiterated that a contingency in Taiwan is a contingency for Japan, calling for the establishment of a quasi-security alliance comprising the US, Europe, Japan, and Taiwan to safeguard regional peace.
The NSB report said that Takaichi attaches great importance to stability in the Taiwan Strait. During the 28th Japan–ASEAN Summit on Sunday, Takaichi said, “Peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are important issues, which directly impact regional security.” She also said that any unilateral changes to the status quo by force “must not be tolerated anywhere in the world.”
The NSB noted that many new cabinet members and Liberal Democratic Party officials support friendly relations with Taiwan. LDP’s new coalition partner, Japan Innovation Party, also advocates closer Taiwan-Japan ties. The bureau said cooperation between Taiwan and Japan will continue to grow in areas such as societal and defense resilience and economic security.
Upon winning the LDP leadership election earlier this month, Takaichi hailed ties with Taiwan in an X post, calling Taiwan “an extremely important partner and cherished friend” that shares fundamental values, close economic links, and active people-to-people exchanges.
