TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The head of the Kuomintang’s Organizational and Development Committee and eight others have been charged with forging documents in a recall campaign targeting a Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker, reports said Friday.
KMT Legislator Hsu Yu-chen (許宇甄) allegedly told aides to obtain a list of party members and instructed volunteers to copy their names on a list of signatories to back up a recall campaign against DPP Legislator Saidhai Tahovecahe (伍麗華), per CNA. Pingtung District prosecutors on Friday charged Hsu, her deputy, KMT Legislator Sasuyu (盧縣一), and six other staff members and aides with forgery.
When Hsu and her team learned that DPP campaigners were planning to file recall petitions targeting KMT lawmakers in early February, they decided to launch their own recall campaign, using the names of party members who had never been asked whether they wanted to sign, prosecutors said. Volunteers completed the name lists at the KMT’s Taipei City office.
The group did not even bother to set up recall campaign booths to collect the signatures of passersby, but submitted 2,839 names in early February, and 1,424 one month later, according to prosecutors.
In the same case, 22 others admitted to the illegal use of private data and to forgery, resulting in the deferral of their indictments by one year. A further 14 suspects were not charged due to a lack of evidence.
