TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The military has stepped into assist with cleanup and disinfection efforts at the site of an African Swine Fever outbreak in Taichung.
Despite two rounds of disinfection at a farm in Taichung’s Wuqi District, two more samples of the virus were found on site. Citing inadequate cleanup operations, the government enlisted soldiers from the Army's 58th Artillery Command to conduct follow-up disinfections, reported CNA.
On Friday, the Taichung Branch of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency held a press conference on the ongoing investigation into the outbreak. Deputy Minister of Agriculture Tu Wen-jane (杜文珍) said that no samples outside of Taichung have been discovered and the farm in Wuqi District remains the primary outbreak site.
On Thursday evening, troops arrived in Wuqi District to ensure the thorough cleanup and disinfection of the site. To bolster efforts, 30 soldiers and 20 officials from the Taichung Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office conducted a preliminary cleanup of the farm.
On Friday, Taichung called for an additional 80 soldiers, including 35 soldiers from the Army’s Chemical Corps Division to thoroughly disinfect the pig farm, per CNA.
