TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration said Sunday that northeasterly monsoon winds are bringing cooler temperatures, rain, and poorer air quality across much of Taiwan.
Northern and northeastern regions will see temperatures between 19 and 25 C throughout the day, while other areas will be slightly cooler in the mornings and evenings, with lows of 21–23 C and daytime highs of 24–31 C, per CNA. The day–night temperature gap will be more pronounced in central and southern Taiwan.
In the outlying islands, Penghu will be cloudy with occasional showers and temperatures of 23–24 C. Kinmen will be mostly sunny with scattered showers and temperatures of 21–25 C, while Matsu will be cloudy with occasional showers and temperatures of 20–21 C.
The CWA warned that strong northeasterly winds are affecting coastal areas north of Tainan, as well as Taitung, the Hengchun Peninsula, and the outlying islands. Winds may reach level six or higher on the Beaufort scale, and the agency advised caution for coastal or maritime activities.
The Ministry of Environment said the northeasterly winds are also carrying pollutants from overseas, with central and southern Taiwan likely to experience greater pollutant accumulation due to downwind conditions. Ozone levels may rise slightly in the afternoon.
Air quality in Yilan and the Hualien–Taitung area is rated “good,” while northern Taiwan, Hsinchu–Miaoli, central Taiwan, Yunlin–Chiayi–Tainan, Kaohsiung–Pingtung, Kinmen, and Penghu are rated “moderate,” with brief periods of “orange alert.” Matsu remains under an “orange alert.”
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Kalmaegi, the 25th tropical storm of the year, was located about 2,020 kilometers southeast of Eluanbi at 2 a.m. Sunday, moving west-northwest. The CWA said the storm is expected to continue moving southward and will not directly impact Taiwan.
