TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — No signs of further spread have been detected in Taichung’s African swine fever outbreak, which authorities said Monday likely originated from improperly cooked kitchen waste.
The Central Emergency Operation Center responding to ASF said the outbreak was confined to a single pig farm in Taichung’s Wuqi District, with one source of infection and no indication of wider transmission, per CNA. Since Oct. 22, authorities have inspected and tested farms in Taichung linked to the affected site.
Authorities also examined pig farms, rendering plants, meat markets, and slaughterhouses nationwide. However, they have not found any other infections or positive environmental samples apart from the affected location.
At a press conference at the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Tu Wen-chen (杜文珍) said epidemiological analysis ruled out transmission through humans, vehicles, or imported pigs. The virus was instead believed to have come from kitchen waste that was not properly heat-treated before being fed to pigs.
