TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Costco on Thursday announced it has lifted limits on pork purchases, while major supermarket chains will soon follow suit in the coming days.
The government on Thursday lifted its ban on pig transport and slaughter imposed to prevent the spread of African swine fever, per SET News. Authorities announced that the transport of live pigs would resume at noon.
Auctions, slaughtering, and carcass transport will restart on Friday. Fresh pork could return to traditional markets as early as Friday afternoon.
Following the announcement, Costco said it has lifted its “one pork item per membership card” purchase restriction starting Thursday. It said it will continue to adjust supply in accordance with government policies.
PX Mart said chilled pork would gradually return to normal supply starting Saturday. A.mart expects to resume chilled pork sales after Monday.
Carrefour said it will start selling chilled pork hotpot slices, ribs, bones, organs, and minced meat at its stores on Tuesday. Vacuum-packed chilled pork products will be available from Wednesday.
