TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Typhoon Fung-wong is likely to make landfall on the west coast of central Taiwan next week, reports said Saturday.
At present, the storm was located east of the Philippines 1,620 kilometers southeast of Taiwan’s southern tip at Eluanbi. Its route was likely to veer north after it crossed the island of Luzon.
A map by the Central Weather Administration showed the typhoon closest to Taiwan on its western side on November 12-13. The administration said it was likely to issue sea warnings before noon Monday and land warnings on Tuesday, per UDN.
According to forecasters, the typhoon could make landfall anywhere on the west coast from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning, with rain likely to envelop the whole country after the weekend.
Forecasters warned that the precise route of the typhoon could not be determined yet, but the most likely scenario involved Fung-wong moving along the west coast for some time before crossing the country heading east to the Pacific.
The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency warned that excessive rainfall in Hualien County during the typhoon might cause the creation of a new barrier lake near the township of Guangfu, per CNA. The overflow of the Mataian barrier lake in September caused at least 19 deaths, with mud and debris covering a wide area of the township, triggering a massive relief effort.
The agency and the Hualien County Government were studying the possible impact of next week’s typhoon and the necessary measures, including the evacuation of residents.
