TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) signed a sister-city agreement on Friday with Basseterre, the capital of Saint Kitts and Nevis, witnessed by Prime Minister Terrance Drew.
CNA reported that Drew and his wife, Diani Prince-Drew, traveled to Tainan with a delegation on Friday. Saint Kitts Ambassador Donya Lynex Francis was present and signed the agreement on Basseterre’s behalf.
Drew said Taiwan's strength stands out when he walks through Tainan’s old streets. He pointed out that both Basseterre and Tainan preserve historic sites, which helps explain why the two cities clicked so quickly.
Saint Kitts' prime minister also noted that Tainan’s mangos have built a name for themselves overseas. He pointed out that Saint Kitts holds a mango festival each year.
Many students from Saint Kitts study in Tainan, Drew pointed out. He said they learn skills and make friendships in Taiwan.
Huang said Drew has spoken up for Taiwan many times and backed Taiwan’s push to join global groups. He said he hopes the delegation will spend time in Tainan and learn why people love the city.
Huang noted that Tainan’s history matches Basseterre’s role as the oldest city in Saint Kitts. He said the new partnership can help both sides trade ideas on culture, education, the economy, and city planning.
