TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese powerlifter Yang Sen (楊森) won gold in the men’s bench press on Sunday at the World Open Powerlifting Championships in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, lifting 340 kilograms in the 120 kg class.
President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) sent a congratulatory message after the victory, praising Yang’s performance and encouraging the Taiwan team to keep striving for top honors, per CNA.
Yang also competed in the squat, where he attempted to surpass his world record of 453.5 kg set at the Chengdu World Games in August. He completed a final lift of 435 kg to take silver.
With strong results in the bench press and squat, Yang earned bronze for overall performance in his category.
Other Taiwanese athletes also posted notable results. Lin Hong-lin (林鴻麟), competing in the same 120 kg division, won silver in the deadlift with a lift of 365 kg.
As of the sixth day of competition, Taiwan has earned eight gold, 11 silver, and seven bronze medals. The final day will feature Lin Li-chen (林俐宸), Tien Chi-sen (田基森), and Wu Yi-chiu (巫翊俅) in the women’s 84 kg and men’s 120+ kg divisions.
